It will be a wild January 1st for temperature variations.

The high for the Austin metro area is expected to be 80 degrees – but tonight’s low is expected to be 28 degrees after a strong cold front arrives overnight.

This is expected to be the first freeze of the 2021-2022 fall/winter season in the city of Austin proper.

The City of Austin activated its cold weather shelter plan for Saturday night. People in need of shelter should report to Building One Texas Center, 505 Barton Springs Road between 6 and 8 p.m. Capital Metro will take them to a cold shelter. The locations of these shelters are not made public. Health screenings will be carried out at the gate.

For cedar fever sufferers, it will be a windy day with gusts of up to 20 miles per hour in the afternoon and up to 30 miles per hour this evening. Cedar counts are expected to be high on Saturday and Sunday, drop slightly on Monday and Tuesday and return to a high level on Wednesday.

Sunday’s high is expected to be 48 degrees and Sunday evening’s low could reach 26 degrees.

Monday brings us freezing temperatures at night. The high will be 55 with an overnight low of 36. On Tuesday, expect a high of 69 and a low of 47. On Wednesday, the high will be around 73 with an overnight low of 41. Thursday, the temperature drops again with a maximum of 58 and a minimum around 28.

No rain is forecast for the week.
