A comedy-drama special based in the City and County of Cork hits the small screen in January.
The very small screen in fact, like the unique “Standing Out” show presented exclusively on Youtube this New Year’s Day.
Produced by BAFTA Award winner Rob Heyland and written by a college professor, the story follows Barry Coughlan, a Corkman who dreams of being a stand-up comedian but struggles to get on stage, battling the anxiety and dyslexia.
“He’s a genius who can’t read,” said director Gary Wade, who Barry has become an “imaginary best friend” over the years of “Standing Up” development.
Played by Gerard Kearney, who starred in The Wind That Shakes Barley, the show takes the viewer on Barry’s journey of self-discovery and bravery as he finds the courage to do what he’s always dreamed of. – player.
Director Gary Wade told CorkBeo the project was a 16-year labor of love.
Developing the idea of ’Standing Up’ in 2005, Gary had written the show for years, while juggling his classes at the University of Limerick and as Director of Education at the Cork School of Economics.
The show is shot in recognizable locations around Cork including Lee Valley, Everyman Palace, University College Cork, Opera Lane, Coughlan’s Bar, Electric and Sober Lane.
Music from established artists such as Rubyhorse, Cry Harridan, Left Bank and Atlas Zero make up the soundtrack.
The cast consists of new debuts and many familiar faces, including Pascal Scott who starred in The Young Offenders and Intermission.
While Covid-19 initially halted production, Gary persisted in the face of the adversary.
“Image by image, piece by piece, scene by scene. I’m going to do a special on dyslexia and anxiety. That’s it. I know he is. I can move on then.
“I’m looking forward to New Years at home. I’m going to watch a moment that gave me so much joy. So many good friends made, so many beautiful escapes, so many crazy memories.
