An Urbandale couple rested on Sunday after welcoming the first baby born in Des Moines in 2022.

Matthew Hickcox, 30, and Olivia Novak, 25, welcomed their daughter Elenora Dawn into the world at 4:12 a.m. on Jan. 1 at UnityPoint Health Des Moines. She weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and was 20.25 inches tall. She is their first child.

Novak and Hickcox are both managers at Hy-Vee stores in the Des Moines area. They had planned to tie the knot in October, but “she just couldn’t fit into the wedding dress,” Hickcox said. “So we’ll wait a bit.”

Novak and the baby were healthy and all went well after a labor that lasted about 10 hours. Their first day and a half of parenthood was great, they said — full of “lots of love,” while being both exciting and exhausting, Hickcox said.

Olivia Novak gave birth to daughter Elenora Dawn at 4:12 a.m. on January 1. Elenora was the first child born in Des Moines in 2022.

“We were surprised by all of this because her due date was the first,” Hickcox said. “So she decided to make her appearance first.”

While pregnant, Novak, who follows a vegan diet, had cravings for vegan donuts. The only Des Moines-area company that sells vegan donuts is Whole Foods in West Des Moines, Hickcox said.

“Whenever she wanted the most was when they were closed,” Hickcox said.
