Doctor Who: Flux sort of ended without really explaining whether the titular event – which destroyed most of the universe – had been canceled, or if things are still in a state.

As it turns out, the damage to the universe still exists and will continue to be explored and unboxed in future episodes, especially the New Years special “Eve of the Daleks”.

“The Doctor lands the TARDIS in a place it doesn’t expect to land in order to reset it from the damage it was done in the Flux from the previous series,” confirmed Chris Chibnall (via Radio schedules).

“She has to constantly deal with the Daleks escaping in a time loop and save the lives of the two people who are there on New Years Eve.”

One way this story follows Flux is that the Daleks are mad about how nearly all of them were destroyed in the last episode and send a new special team to kill the Doctor and his companions.

You probably saw them get exterminated in the preview for the next episode. Is this part of the time loop?

“These are Execution Daleks,” the showrunner added. “They have slightly different weapons and have a very clear purpose for it.

“They are not trying to destroy the world. They are trying to destroy the Doctor in payment for what was done to the Daleks at the end of the previous series.”

Jodie Whittaker will be joined in the New Years special by Mandip Gill as Yaz and John Bishop as Dan, as well as guest stars Aisling Bea as Sarah, Adjani Salmon as Nick and Pauline McLynn.

The special is the first of three to air in 2022, a second will follow in the spring, and the third – which will see Jodie’s Doctor regenerate – airing as part of the BBC’s centenary celebrations in the fall.

Doctor Who returns on New Years Day on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. In the United States, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max.
