First Night Boston, New England’s biggest New Year’s Eve party, will return to celebrate the start of 2022 as organizers announced on Monday. The free, family-friendly event will run from noon Dec. 31 to 12:30 a.m. Jan. 1 in Copley Square. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of last year’s in-person first night festivities in Boston. Organizers held a virtual celebration instead. First Night Boston 2022 will feature a wide array of local musicians, artists and performers, as well as dazzling ice sculptures, the “people’s parade” and fireworks in the back bay. Additional performances will take place at the Boston Public Library, Copley Place, Boston Common and surrounding churches. Organizers said a full schedule of events will be released in the coming weeks and full event details will be available at www.firstnightboston.org. Night Boston is produced in partnership with the city and is the world’s longest first night celebration after being founded in 1977. This year’s in-person New Year’s Eve celebration will adhere to all current safety measures related to the city and state related COVID-19 precautions, including mandatory mask-wearing at indoor venues. If city and state recommendations are adjusted closer to the event, organizers will similarly adjust First Night Boston’s guidelines to conform to those established by the governing bodies.
