AUSTIN (KXAN) — House the Homeless held its 21st annual New Year’s Eve celebration on Saturday. The organization provided homeless community members with cold weather information, resources and supplies ahead of the Saturday night forecast under freezing temperatures.
“There’s a new face to homelessness now, and we’re finding people who officially have jobs, even families…and they’re staying in a car,” co-organizer Will Hyatt said Saturday.
The city of Austin activated its cold weather shelters on Saturday ahead of the overnight chill that arrives in central Texas.
“Getting some of the basics that people need to stay alive in cold weather is absolutely essential. We donate hats, scarves, gloves, thermal underwear, things that help people get through the winter,” Hyatt said.
The city is working with Travis County, Capital Metro, Salvation Army, Front Steps and other area service providers to offer shelter resources when temperatures drop near or below freezing.
