Cambodia ended the three-day Khmer New Year holiday last week when 4.58 million people toured the country, a positive move benefiting local tourism-related businesses recovering from the pandemic. of Covid-19.

Tourism-related businesses – accommodation services, restaurants and transport – recorded full bookings, the tourism ministry said.

The success of this year’s New Year celebrations, after a two-year hiatus, reflects herd immunity against Covid-19.

Tourism Minister Thong Khon said an unexpected number of tourists visited major tourist destinations during the holiday.

“Boutique hotels, guesthouses and other accommodation services in almost all provinces that have been able to reopen have received almost 100% reservations while restaurants and cafes were also almost full during these three days,” he said.

“This influx of tourists has created enormous economic benefits at the national and local levels,” Khon said.

“The private sector is delighted with the influx of visitors beyond expectations on the occasion of the New Year and is very optimistic about the recovery of tourism, in particular following the lifting of strict measures for vaccinated tourists,” said Khon added.

The success testifies to business recovery and increased investor confidence, said Lim Heng, vice president of the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce.

“The recovery of the economy since November and the celebration of the Khmer New Year holiday are due to the success of the government’s vaccination strategy,” Heng said.

People’s travel during the New Year holidays has contributed significantly to the tourism sector as well as cash flow across the country, which is a driver for businesses to resume operations, he added. .

“The New Year celebration these days was a reflection of the government’s success and economic recovery. It sends a message to the world and to investors that Cambodia can provide good public health to investors and that they can invest with confidence in the country,” he said.

This year’s Khmer New Year celebration, one of Cambodia’s longest holidays, was allowed after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said Cambodian people can celebrate the Khmer New Year, urging the public to continue practicing all preventive measures to stop the spread of the virus.
