A police investigation is underway after a man was found dead in a village road in the early hours of New Years Day.

The body of the man, in his 30s, was found by police with no clear idea at this time of the circumstances surrounding what happened.

Due to what was described as ‘prior contact’ with the individual, the matter has already been referred to the watchdog at the Independent Office for Police Conduct, who has been ‘advised’ of the ‘incident.

Police received reports at 4.30am today (January 1) of a man on Lily Lane Road in Wigan, MEN reports.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene, Greater Manchester Police said.

At this time, no other details have been released, including whether the incident is being treated as suspicious.

GMP has referred the incident to its Professional Standards Branch.

Police want to hear from anyone with information — and dashcam footage filmed in the city’s Platt Bridge area in the half hour to 4:30 a.m.

In a statement, GMP said: “We are requesting information following the death of a man in Wigan.

“At approximately 4.30am today (Saturday 1st January 2022) we received a report of a man lying on Lily Lane in the Bamfurlong area.

“Officers attended the scene and a man, believed to be in his 30s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation is ongoing into the circumstances surrounding his death.

“Anyone with information, particularly dash cam footage filmed in the Platt Bridge area in the half hour before 4:30 a.m., is asked to contact us as soon as possible.

“Due to previous contact with police, this incident has been referred to our Professional Standards Branch and the Independent Office for Police Conduct has been notified.”
