MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) — A bit of New York will fill Myrtle Beach’s Market Common this time around on Friday.

Thousands of people are expected for Southern Times Square’s ninth annual New Year’s Eve celebration. They will scale down the event a bit this year.

“People dress up, the festival vibe, it’s all fun,” said Rakesh Jain, whose family travels from New Jersey for the holidays.

Jain says he and his family have already done all of the New York City Times Square ball drop in person.

This year, he’s looking forward to taking all that experience to a few more southern states, where it might not be as hectic.

“I think by being here we will have the opportunity to do the things we want while the ball is dropping,” Jain said.

The Jain family won’t be the only ones arriving from afar to attend the ninth annual Southern Times Square.

Market Common’s marketing assistant, Lynn Makris, says they have people coming from all over the country.

“It’s a bit different from last year because we were in the middle of COVID and there were a lot of restrictions and apparently it rained a lot,” Makris said. “This year we don’t have those restrictions and expect great weather.”

The Market Common changed the way tickets were processed for the event last year to benefit businesses that may have struggled during the pandemic and have become accustomed to larger crowds.

They’ve taken that ticket model back this year: To get a ticket, you need to spend $25 or more at a Market Common business this week.

You can then present the receipt for this purchase to the common market office near Crepe Creations, where they will give you a ticket for the night.

Rakesh says it won’t be a problem for him as he already has plenty of receipts from his family vacation.

“While we’ve been here, we’ve supported local businesses and the community,” Jain said. “It’s a fun place.”

Over the next few days, crews will begin setting up for the band, wine and beer garden, fireworks and balloon drop, so you can expect road closures in the area at from Friday morning.

Although many pandemic policies have been lifted, many security policies are still in place, listed below.
