Palm Bay detectives continue to investigate an apparent murder-suicide involving a man who fatally injured his fiance by shooting other guests at a New Year’s Eve rally.

He then turned the handgun over on himself.

Palm Bay Police are investigating a reported New Year's Day homicide.

The incident happened around 3:45 a.m. Friday. Palm Bay Police have been called to a residence on Saladino Street, a short distance from Fountainhead Memorial Park on Babcock Street in the south-eastern part of town, to investigate reports of a shooting.

Police said Kevin Schmitt, 51, of Palm Bay, shot dead Karen Cloyd, 50, at the residence.

Detectives said a New Years Eve rally was taking place at the house. For some reason, Schmitt pulled out a gun of unknown caliber and allegedly began shooting two men who were invited to the rally.

One of the bullets hit Cloyd, detectives said. A guest called Palm Bay Police, who responded to the scene within moments to find two people with gunshot wounds. Schmitt, who shot himself in the head, was pronounced dead on Saturday, police said.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately known.

“There was no indication he was aiming at her. It’s confusing right now, there was no indication, no sign, no discussion,” said Lt. Jeff Spears, spokesperson for the Palm Police Department. Bay.

Crime scene officers and detectives remained at the site until Friday morning. Schmitt and Cloyd’s autopsies will be performed later this week.

The fatal shooting was the first reported homicide of the new year. There were 42 homicides reported in Brevard County in 2020
