A 21-year-old man was charged this week with killing a man by setting him on fire near a Pasadena residential street on New Years Day 2021, authorities said.
Jeovani Pluma was already in jail for an unrelated matter when Pasadena detectives linked him to the death of 30-year-old Ulises Nieto-Cabrera, Pasadena Police Lt. Keith Gomez said.
Nieto-Cabrera was found by Pasadena officers around 8 a.m. in the 700 block area of Rockwood Road near the La Loma Bridge with severe burns, Gomez said. He died at a local hospital.
The residential street joins the Arroyo Seco trail.
Pasadena detectives from the Robbery/Homicide Unit worked hundreds of hours investigating the Nieto-Cabrera murder, Gomez said. Police said in May he was intentionally targeted and attacked and asked for the public’s help in identifying a suspect.
“Their unwavering tenacity in solving this sinister murder resulted in the identification of a suspect,” Gomez said.
Inmate records showed Pluma was arrested on July 22. Pasadena police said the arrest was a suspected hit-and-run in Los Angeles in which two cyclists were hit by a Jeep Cherokee, one of whom died.
Los Angeles detectives have identified Pluma as the driver of the hit-and-run, although details of that case have not been released by Pasadena police.
Pluma was being held in jail on $4 million bail, according to inmate records.
He was charged with two counts of murder, arson, torture and two counts of hit and run Thursday by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, court records show.
The two cases have been combined and a hearing date to enter a plea has not yet been set.
