Copperopolis, Calif. – A man died on New Years Day after a “mutual fight” fight in Copperopolis, but showed no outward signs of injury.

Calaveras sheriff’s deputies responded at around 12:45 p.m. at the 100 block of Stone Street near the Gateway Hotel in Copperopolis Square after receiving reports of an unconscious man. Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Greg Stark told Clarke Broadcasting the victim was already on his way to the hospital when deputies arrived, but paramedics said “the male subject showed no obvious signs of trauma”.

Deputies questioned witnesses who admitted there had been a ‘physical altercation’ between two men. Lt. Stark revealed that during the initial investigation “deputies concluded there was alcohol involved and it was a mutual fight”. [meaning both agreed to the fight].”

Later that day, the male victim was taken to another out-of-county hospital where it was determined that he suffered serious bodily injury. Lt. Stark said, “Detectives later discovered that the male subject succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.”

No arrests have been made and further information, including the victim’s name, age or origin, has not been released as it is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Investigations Division at (209) 754-6500.
