Chennai police have placed restrictions on New Year’s celebrations in hotels and public places amid growing cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, Health Minister Ma Subramanian informed Wednesday. The total number of Omicron variant infections in the state currently stands at 45.


Speaking to a press conference on Wednesday, the Minister of Health said all of those patients who have been found infected with Omicron are asymptomatic and fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

“Coronavirus cases are on the rise in Chennai. 15,000 RT PCR tests were carried out in Chennai last week per day, but as of Tuesday alone 23,000 tests were carried out in Chennai and they will be stepped up in the coming days,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chennai police have banned New Year’s celebrations at resorts, farms and clubs. The hotels were, however, allowed to operate until 11 p.m. on December 31, according to the government’s latest advisory.

Vehicle traffic was prohibited on the arteries near the marina, Elliots and other beaches from 9 p.m. on December 31.

India has so far identified 781 cases of the Omicron variant in 21 states and UTs, of which 241 people have recovered or migrated, according to data from the Union Ministry of Health on Wednesday.

Delhi recorded the maximum number of cases at 238, followed by Maharashtra at 167, Gujarat 73, Kerala 65 and Telangana 62.
