Chennai police have imposed restrictions on New Year celebrations in hotels and public places amid rising cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, Health Minister Ma Subramanian said on Wednesday. The total number of Omicron variant infections in the state currently stands at 45.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, the Minister of Health said that all those patients who were found to be infected with Omicron are asymptomatic and fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
“Coronavirus cases are increasing in Chennai. 15,000 RT PCR tests were done in Chennai last week per day, but on Tuesday alone, 23,000 tests were done in Chennai and they will be scaled up in the coming days,” a- he added.
Meanwhile, Chennai police have banned New Year celebrations at resorts, farms and clubs. Hotels were, however, allowed to operate until 11 p.m. on December 31, in line with the latest government advice.
Vehicular traffic was prohibited on the traffic lanes near the Marina, Elliots and other beaches from 9 p.m. on December 31.

On Tuesday, Chennai Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal warned people against overcrowding to ring in 2022, citing the Tamil Nadu government’s advisory against overcrowding as coronavirus.
The Minister of Health further said that Chief Minister MK Stalin called a review meeting on the situation of the Covid-19 pandemic in the state on December 31 and called on the public to get vaccinated against it. Covid-19 in the mega vaccination camp being held across the state. on Sunday.
“1600 vaccination sites are set up in Chennai alone. Our goal is to vaccinate 2.5 million people in a single day,” he added.
India has so far identified 781 cases of the Omicron variant in 21 states and UT, of which 241 people have recovered or migrated, according to Union Health Ministry data on Wednesday.
Delhi recorded the peak number of cases at 238, followed by Maharashtra at 167, Gujarat 73, Kerala 65 and Telangana 62.
